coisas / things - day 22

Up, Down.

Felix, qui potuit rerum cognoscere causas.
Happy who can learn the causes of things.

The coming of Jesus into the world, then, seems to have taken place historically at one of those dialectical confrontations in which history suddenly expands to myth and indicates a dimension beyond the historical. The poet W.H. Auden has attempted, in his For the Time Being and elsewhere, to show how the completeness of the pagan achievement, along with its obvious limitations, formed an appropriate background for the Incarnation. Everything was there: resignation, acceptance of law and order and of its accredited images of authority, an understanding too of the principle of change and mutability, a feeling that all was for the best if one could really absorb the great and overruling law of causality:
Felix qui potuit rerum cognoscere causas.
Everything was there except the revolutionary challenge to make a complete break with all of it. The break involved a good deal of cruelty and fanaticism on both sides, but the bloody historical record, as usual, only muddles the real issue.

Northrop Frye, The Great Code: Chapter Four, Typology I.

i read this bit and dropped off to sleep, to powerful dreams which woke me before the dawn imagining a ringing telephone ... and already forgotten except for a momentary repudiation of Abishag and concupiscent warmth which i experienced on actually getting out of bed :-)

Taylor's great distinction: transcendent vs immanent is effectively lost on me ... and this subject-object / cause & effect is becoming likewise

(ahh, maybe, the trade, in the shade, is made !)

Omne supervacuum pleno de pectore manat.
Everything that is superfluous overflows from the full bosom.

or maybe this will make it clearer ...

Lacrimae rerum. / Tears for things.

or this:

John Chapter 3 Verse 8: João Capítulo 3 Versículo 8:
The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. O vento sopra onde quer, e ouves a sua voz; mas não sabes donde vem, nem para onde vai; assim é todo aquele que é nascido do Espírito.
